Roof Moss and Lichen in Houston: How to Remove Them Safely
By the Peak Clean team · October 13, 2026
Black streaks get most of the attention, but if you see green fuzz or crusty gray-green patches on your roof, that's moss or lichen. They're more stubborn than algae and worth dealing with sooner rather than later.
Moss, lichen, and algae: what's the difference
- Algae: the dark streaks that run down the roof slope
- Moss: soft, green, fuzzy growth, usually in shaded damp areas
- Lichen: flat, crusty patches in gray, green, or orange that cling tightly to the roof
Why they matter
Moss and lichen hold moisture against the roof surface. Moss can also lift the edges of shingles over time. Both are harder to remove than a light algae streak, and the longer they stay, the more they spread.
Don't scrape and don't blast
Scraping or wire-brushing can tear granules off shingles, and high-pressure water can do the same while driving water underneath. Most manufacturers advise against both. The safer path is a low-pressure soft wash that treats the growth itself.

What treatment looks like
A soft wash roof treatment applies a solution that needs time to work on the growth, followed by a gentle rinse. Heavy moss and lichen may take more than one treatment, and treated growth often keeps fading over days or weeks rather than disappearing at once.
Preventing regrowth
- Trim branches that shade and drop debris on the roof
- Clear leaves and debris from roof valleys and gutters
- Ask a roofer whether zinc or copper strips make sense for your roof
- Plan to clean again when growth returns, which varies with shade and moisture
