Hard Water Stains on Windows in Houston: Causes and Fixes
By the Peak Clean team · October 13, 2026
If your windows have white spots or a cloudy film that comes right back after you wipe them, you're likely looking at hard water stains. They're one of the most common window problems in Houston, and they're easier to prevent than to remove.
What causes hard water stains
Hard water carries dissolved minerals. When it lands on glass, usually from sprinklers, rain mixed with dust, or hose overspray, the water evaporates and leaves the minerals behind as white spots. Do it often enough and the spots build into a cloudy film.
Why they're so stubborn
A squeegee removes water, but not minerals that have already dried onto the glass. Left for months, those deposits can bond to the surface and, in bad cases, etch it, which is physical damage to the glass rather than just dirt on top.

How pros get spot-free exterior glass
For exterior windows, a water-fed pole with purified, deionized water is the usual answer. Purified water contains no minerals, so it dries without leaving spots. It also lets a crew reach upper-story windows safely from the ground without leaning ladders against the house.
Removing existing stains
Hard water stain removal is a separate treatment from a regular cleaning. A good crew inspects the glass first and tells you whether it's a good candidate. Light spotting often improves a lot, while heavy etching may only improve and cannot always be fully reversed.
How to prevent them
- Aim sprinkler heads away from windows and siding
- Clean windows regularly so minerals don't build up. Twice a year works well for many homes
- Deal with spotting early, before it etches
- Avoid abrasive pads and scrapers that can scratch glass
